linux from nothing

We now got Knoppix and Gentoo that basically boot you into a working linux.

how could you start building a system using instructions on linuxfromscratch if you don't even have any linux distribution?

kind of like what Mr. Trovald got when he wrote linux-0.1. can one walk in his shoes?
