I'm still climbing the learning curve on SuSE 8.1, trying to figure out the GUI way of life instead of just digging into the configuration files. I learned about the runlevel editor (which is really pretty slick), and have been playing with creating rc.startup scripts to take advantage of its dependency controls.
I'm stumped now trying to figure out how to get it to load the ieee1394 modules automatically at boot. If I do a ``modprobe ohci1394'' once the system's running, it loads all the appropriate modules so I can mount firewire disks. In Caldera 3.1.1 and earlier, all this required was editing the /etc/modules/default file, and it Just Worked(tm) from then on. A second part of this is how to make new initrd files including different modules than those selected at installation time.
