I think there is an option when compiling to do it in a private directory so that it doesn't conflict with the system's installed compilers. You can break a lot of things on a LInux system by replacing gcc (notably most perl modules are very dependent on the compiler, libraries, etc.). There's been some discussion of this on the openpkg developers list in the last few days started when somebody asked why their perl RPMS are dependent on gcc.
