This worked, and the fonts were added according to xset -q. Problem is, abiword still crashes when I try to use the luxi anything fonts. So, this is still not working. I am beginning to think this is just a bug in abiword, not some configuration issue. Do you have to run mkfontdir before adding the font directory? I tried mkfontdir, got no error messages, but nothing was added to the font directory and it didn't seem to do anything helpful.
