Hmm.. I've never had that problem, but I would suspect a network issue,
too many collisions, timeouts or other such. Anything in
/var/log/messages, or is it a total lock up requiring a reboot?

hard locked. no ping response, no keyboard response, nada. after a reboot, there's nothing logged either. i kinda doubt its a network issue, since this is on my home network, and there are only two other boxes currently powered up, and neither of them are showing any networking errors in ifconfig output.
