Excuse the crosspost (also gento to gentoo-user), but I'm not having
much luck. Alsa seems to be a POS, but that's the wave of the future.

For non gentooers, modules-update is a script that rebuilds the
/etc/modules.autoload file used during bootup.

Yeah, the old "should be ok." I have all the necessary modules and
settings and modules-update, but no joy.

The OSS driver ens1371 woked just fine on 2.4.x, but the fscking alsa
won't handle it! At boot, I get

Jul 5 07:45:29 richeypc3 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device
        0000:00:09.0
        Jul 5 07:45:30 richeypc3 kernel: AC'97 0:0 does not respond - RESET

If I do modprobe snd-ens1371, all the usual suspects load (see below) ,
but devfsd will not make any /dev/xxx entries for sound (did kill -HUP
nnn after the modprobe).

        snd_ens1371 13572 0
        snd_rawmidi 14720 1 snd_ens1371
        snd_seq_device 4100 1 snd_rawmidi
        snd_pcm 62592 1 snd_ens1371
        snd_page_alloc 4612 1 snd_pcm
        snd_timer 15872 1 snd_pcm
        snd_ac97_codec 39428 1 snd_ens1371
        snd 30724 7
        snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec

Any ideas?
