A couple of steps in involved here: 1) Select the solid color background 2) Invert the selection (everything *but* the background) 3) Cut 4) File -> New -> Fill Type Transparent - the dimensions will automagically be the size of the cut buffer (handy, that) 5) Paste Some Gimp wizard will have a way more elegant way to do it, I'm sure, but this is what works for me.
