<LOL>, I guess OF's like me was used to seeing JUST the runlevel specific scripts
in those directories they pretained to, and then the the "init" "walked" up (or down) the
runlevel (via inittab) to do what it needed ...

err .. clarification on this.

The /etc/init.d is a SYMLINK to /etc/rc.d/init.d.
Inside of /etc/rc.d ARE the directories of rc#.d, which
in turn is SYM linked to /etc/rc#.d, respectively.

Ok, in each of the rc#.d directories, are the SYMLINKS to
the /etc/rc.d/init.d stuff, in each of the rc#.d, is the S and the
K scripts, which are identical in runlevel 2 - 5 ..

ok. so other than the same exact init scripts getting run in all the run levels, what is wrong?

So are you saying that there is no /etc/init.d/ with the init scripts, and that in /etc/rc.d/rc3 the scripts just are sitting in there, without symlinks? If so, then yea, that is all messed up.
