Going back to my old support days. Wiring used for telephones, when used for telephones works fine. When the same wires are used for other purposes, including data transmission, strange things can and will happen. Depending on the quality and condition of the modular cord things can go from OK to not working at all, so the poorer the quality/condition the shorter it would need to be to minimize the effect. You might also want to check the polarity. Reverse polarity has virtually no effect on pots service but can put the skids to data transmission quality. Now this is all from modem use but I think that a DSL over pots would be open to some of the same pitfalls. > >I might add that I'm currently using (at least) a 25 foot phone cord for >DSL at my wife's house.
