Not only indestructible, but the IBM warranty service is hard to beat. In
the U.S. I've called one day, had a box from DHL here the next day, and had
the repaired laptop back from IBM two days later at no cost to me.

The laptop I'm using myself is a four year old ThinkPad 600 running
SuSE 8.2, and previously ran most of the Caldera versions from
OpenLinux 2.3 on.

Personally I like the IBM ``eraser'' mouse in the middle of the keys, and
hate the touchpads found on most other laptops. On the Thinkpads I can do
everything I need without taking my fingers far from the home keys, and the
three mouse buttons are conveniently under my thumbs.
