it says, at the prompt, "input/output error." the drive is recognized at boot, no problem, mounts uneventfully, and, as i said, the data seem entirely viewable. cd was burned iso9660 with joliet extensions, which module i have and which seems to work properly -- i do get the full long filenames, which is what joliet does. -- dep Writing takes no time.
