Not being facetious but have you set the HD jumpers to be the master or stand-alone? Make sure the IDE cable is plugged into the mb with the pins aligned right? Older motherboards often don't have the guides on them. Also, some bioses (IBM's come to mind) keep giving the error until you enter the bios and exit saving changes.
