It's just an *impression* of safety, Burns. SUV's are not subject to the
same crash test requirements as 'conventional' passenger vehicles, AFAIK.
Specifically, the crumple zones in a conventional car reduce the G forces
which are transferred to the passenger cage and thus the occupants' bodies.
In the same crash involving an SUV, the G forces transferred to the victims
is much higher and results in much higher internal damage. A typical injury
tears a major artery in the chest; massive blood loss and rapid death
follows.

I take comfort in the fact that if some idiot in an Urban Assault Vehicle
tries to collide with me, a) my BMW is sufficiently agile that I have a
chance of avoiding him/her and b) if we do collide, those crumple zones
give me a better chance of survival. I've had a BMW crumple around me once
before, and walked away unscathed.

Best,
