I agree more-or-less with the above, with these qualifications:

- Don't overdo it.  Periodic stuff of great interest is fine, but if 
it gets excessive (and if people really need to see *constant* info 
about a particular distribution) then I think realistically they 
should join the list in question.

- As I mentioned earlier, I'd rather not see security advisories 
here.  If you want to see 'em, there are many lists you can join.  

The nice thing about being on the lists yourself?  You can setup 
filters and so forth.  In my case I filter all mailing list stuff 
right to separate folders for each list before I ever read it.  

When I'm in the mood to read about X, Y, or Z, I go into the 
appropriate folder.  The *only* stuff I allow to come into my regular 
inbox (because of their urgent nature) are.... security advisories.  
If people are just reposting that stuff to a general list, A) you 
can't winnow it out as 'urgent', and B) it just bogs down an 
unrelated list.
