I have used the following procedure successfully to clone Caldera Beta 3.1
and Gentoo to reiserfs, but it fails for Vectorlinux. Since it appears to
be kernel related, I thought I would ask if any of you could explain the
behavior. I've used the same .config for the kernel with make oldconfig
across several 2.4.x kernels. Vectorlinux is at 2.4.5; the others are at
2.4.x.
Here's the procedure:
1. Running from a kernel with reiserfs support and current reiserfs tools
2. Create /boot and / partitions
3. Reboot after fdisk changes
4. (Mount the /boot partion with -o notail option
5. cp -a /boot/* /mnt/xxx (the new boot partition)
6. umount the new boot partition
7. Mount the new / partition and create all directories ( all are root
root and
/tmp gets 1777 permissions).
8. CP -a /dirxx/* to correspondin directory on new / partion (all that
are not
empty and of course not /proc or /mnt)
9. Create mount point directories under the new /mnt
10. Edit the new /etc/fstab and correct the root partition entry (the
new /boot partition is not mounted by fstab)
11. boot my Gentoo system (my reference) and update lilo.config.
I use a
script to mount all partitions appropriately. Each /boot
partition that is
reiserfs is mounted with -o notail.
12. /sbin/lilo and reboot
For Gentoo and 3.1 beta, this procedure produced a usable system. My
Gentoo reference platform was cloned thusly.
For my Vectorlinux system, the kernel boots normally and most messages are
the expected, but the boot hangs at the start of init. Just before the
hang, I get a message saying that the system is trying to load a module
nls_iso889... (or similar), but the root fs is not mounted. A few lines
later the root fs is mounted ro. There are no such lines or any reference
to module nls_iso889... in any boots of any of my other platforms.
Does anyone know it this is a 2.4.5 peculiarity or what???
I'm going to hunt and find the offending module and make it kernel
resident and also try the clone to an extfs to try to isolate the problem.
TIA for your help.
