I don't use Suse but....
The problem with modules is that if you compile a kernel, then compile the
modules, the modules are compiled for the kernel you are currently running.
There may be a switch you can throw to avoid this, but I just compile the
kernel, reboot into the new kernel, and then make modules and make modules_install.
Then, reboot again. 
Getting the modules to install properly can be a pain if modprobe isn't
working.
If depmod -a works on your system (put into rc.local) then things might go
easier, if not, you can install them by hand.
