As an added note....  I tried to backup my SuSE 7.2 install onto a Sony 9000 
DAT using an Adaptec 152X conttroller.   Never, ever, had a problem with this 
but it hung up every time.

I finally switched to a different tape drive (one with auto-terminate on it) 
and it worked fine.

I think something is either wrong with the scsi stuff in 2.4.x  (that was 
2.4.4)  or they've made it very fussy.
