Well, my Sunday was spent rebuilding three servers -- Ok two.
About 0740 I took a real good power spike that went through the two big
UPS's I have running my three servers. The Internet gateway had its
video card fried and the hard drive scrambled in a way I've never seen
before (very interesting seeing what should have been normal ASCII files
suddenly become block devices with really bizarre owners and permissions
-- in fact, impossible permissions). My main server also had its file
system similarly scrambled. And the other server just plain crashed (at
least it wasn't scrambled).
You know, tape backups take just about forever to run. Thankfully, I
could tar off /var and save all the mail. That partition wasn't
scrambled.
Think I'd have rather sat around sticking forks in my eyes. By Sunday
nite when all was back to normal I felt like I had been.
I just love 3rd world countries. ;-).
Ciao,
David A. Bandel
