I did an *everything* install from the cd and I am using (gtk) abiword 
(version 0.7) as advertised, under kde with no font issues i can detect yet. 
So I'm not sure what you're saying above.

As a distro-install issue, It is probably as good idea(tm) to install gnome 
but none of it's devel packages. quite a few added extras get included in the 
kde start panels that I have found useful. One of them, without question is 
abiword.
