Bare in mind, I truly know nothing. I did things by rote and sheer good luck.
I 'think' you might be unaware of the already-existing 'ports', which I fell
over, rather than knew about.

I had zero, zilch, nada issues with mysql. Which was an enourmous surprise to
me.

I quite literally "/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld start"

and the 'server' was running. It said "OK" in green so I guess that was 'ok'
by me too.

I then used Knoda

although it took a little crunch time in compiling the various tarballs
required, there were NO issues or hidden gotcha's. It compiled, installed,
and ran.

It 'found' the msqyl daemon (server). And it took no effort on my part to
start using the forms and tables dialogs of knoda. It is the latter that is
the bottom line for me, I have no interest in mysql, nor should I have to
know it's inner workings or anything about it. I want to USE and develop a
database, not become a relational DBMS left knee over toehold guru.

Sadly, knoda is not a programmable dbase gui. Just a klunk and feel, but
exceptionally intuitive and very wyswig. I really really really hope the
author develops this application further because it sits comfortably with me.
(dead simple, stupid)

What I'm now understanding, is the mysql postresql etc are servers for
amorphous databases that you DID NOT write or create. There are any number of
'tools' to _administer_, look at, tweak, fiddle, poke, start, restart, the
mysql server (and any database it *might* be connected to) but there are
(ALMOST) NO user tools to create databases. Anyone suggesting I use a goddamn
command line, can, can, well, no comment.

I was blissfully unaware that neither KDE, nor GNOME, have an inherent
database tool, and nothing on the horizon. Rekall is so flakey it's not even
a toy. The kde-db, which will be released 'real soon now' in kde beta2,
_might_ be a start of better things to come, but it points out, glaringly,
how far Linux has to go to become a real soho desktop. My money is on
hk_classes, it's "better" (tm) than kde-db

As far as kylix is concerned, I've used it to connect to mysql You have to
select the libmysql.so.6.0 'connection driver' in the appropropriate tab on
the kylix design gui. ( I forget which but can visit it again if you need
help).

That said, kylix is horrendously cluttered. It tries to look like Access but
lacks any automation of the basics. It is a dog's breakfast of inconsistent
'property tables' and difficult to navigate. Granted, if you
know Deplhi, then you can get round the very-hard-to-use kylix app widgets,
but it isn't pleasant. I also think that the 'full install' contributes to
the clutter on the gui tabs. Most of the 'extras' I probably didn't need. But
borland need to rethink that presentation into a drop down selection rather
than across the screen widget panel-tabs.

I was getting a trifle annoyed at the gui presentation and 'feel' of kylix,
then I discovered it has (s)wine embedded and realised why the X server was
acting so klunky. I had wrongly assumed that Kylix was a full bottled X
implementation. It isn't. (s)wine has a flaw in that it cannot, or does not,
get proper feedback from X to where, exactly, the windows it displays are,
nor their size. Most of the algorithms used in (s)wine are fudgework.

If I came from a Delphi background, I'd perservere with it, and, to be
truthful, I'd be thrilled at this new avenue. But as it is, I think I'll
spend the time using Kdevelop and work on it's database classes instead.

I hope you persevere with Kylix because there's precious little else out
there.

I'm now going to post and email to Mr Knoda telling him how much I love him.
