Sorry about the earlier rant there guys. I think I have fixed the problem. I believe it is related to one or more of the memory leaks in cupsd 1.1.5, replaced it with 1.1.9 but the problem was still present. Went to /var/spool/cups and there were 3800 files of zero length all in a row. a quick rm after killing cupsd and then a restart and so far so good, things look good. Again my apologies.
