The logs just say failed attempt. I checked both secure and messages.
I removed the -r from my /etc/passwd file, and things didn't get better.
I installed another upload user, without the -r in passwd, and things worked
fine.
SO, having another senior moment, I remembered another trick, and used 
/bin/false in /etc/passwd.
Now, things works as expected. So, if I am correct, and I may well be wrong,
if some guy crashed ftp with a buffer overflow, he may just wind up without
a bash shell.
This sounds too easy.
