Someday, I will be able to solve linux problems by deduction. You know,
solving problems by thinking.
However, I always solve these things by wandering about in an agitated mental haze
until
I fall across the answer. Only if the fall hurts do I sometimes realize the
truth.
ANYWAY:
In this case, the post install script didn't run, I GUESS.
The configuration software needs a raw print queue to do its magic on the
printer (like printing test pages and the like). It calls this z53-outfiles,
just for the record. It also makes another queue called lexmarkz53, which is
the one you use to print actual print jobs with the print filter z52.sh in
the lexmark directory.
This should have been obvious from the symptoms (print jobs fine, but direct
communication with the printer was broken). In fact, I had the exact
OPPOSITE problem a couple of months ago when I installed the z32 on the Redhat box.
That one I
figured out by deduction, however.
So far, this printer (z53) looks like a winner on linux. We should all
support lexmark, I think.
