I have had the same problem with just a standard install. Your best bet is
to look at /var/log/gui for details on what is happening at X start and why
it's resetting.
Mine seems to happen when I remove the "vga=791" from the kernel line in
GRUB's menu.lst file. The VGA parm makes my CLI difficult to read (tiny
characters) but X seems to work. When I remove it or replace it with the
"vga=274" which was placed at install on another eW3.1 box, X doesn't
start.

Hi folks,
Considering all the trouble I've been having getting my eD2.4 install
up to snuff, I decided to try migrating to eW3.1, which I have
installed on a test partition. I downloaded and installed kernel 2.4.9
and X4.1.0 without too much difficulty. I then tried to start
installing KDE2.2 from the SRPMs I was using under eD2.4, but ended up
with some compile issues. Rather than debug that, I decided to
download the pre-compiled RPMs. After installing all packages, I tried
to telinit 5 to start KDE2.2, but it doesn't want to work.
kdm starts, but before a login screen displays, X restarts. This
happens repeatedly (X starts - doesn't get to kdm login - x restarts)
until kdm apparently gives up and I get an error message, 'Id "gu"
respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes'. If I don't telinit 3,
then the cycle gets repeated in 5 minutes.
'startx' works. I get an xsession and can run non-kde programs
(composing this in Netscape), but when trying to run KDE apps from
plain X, they fail with an error "error while loading shared
libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol:
stylChange_8QToolBarR6QStyle", but I'm not at all sure whether that's
relevent to my problem.
/var/log/messages has:
kdm[1781]:Greeter returned non-zero exit code 32512
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-81
kdm[1802]:Greeter returned non-xero exit code 32512
So this looks like an error with kdm, or kdmrc.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Tim
