I lived in Iran for about 8 months. I never figured out the difference
between the two type of Islam. Certainly, the Iranians were a different type
from the Iraqis. Both Islamic countries have exported terror against US
targets. Both deny many human rights. Both have behaved very aggressively
towards their neighbors.
The Iranians are a very nice and attractive people. The Iranians
certainly never let us forget they were Aryans, not Semites!
They were very Western oriented. Every Iranian we met wanted to go to the
States and get a college degree, a job, and marry a blond (Not kidding.)
American women who married Iranian men and went back to Iran found out that
their American passports meant nothing anymore.
It was a big defeat for
progress in that part of the world when the Shah's regime collapsed.
As I recall, the Shah developed lymphoma and came to the US for
treatment. The Islamic govt of Iran threatened to attack Americans
if we did not surrender him to their regime. I remember well
Senator Kennedy (still in office)
suggesting that we do just that. Henry Kissinger gave his usual eloquent
defense of the Shah, saying that the Shah had been our best friend in that
part of the world for decades and that to discard him just because he was no
longer useful would be a disgrace. Thank God HK's argument won.
My experience in Iran helped me (and my very liberal Boston wife) outgrow
liberalism. And especially, to be wary of Islam.
