The LiteOn model shows up as working under linux (in the linux-mandrake
hardware database as working). The cd-record homepage also suggests that all
cd-writers produced in 1999 or earlier are supported. Its just the
burn-proof that I'm worried about.

Cheaper when you figure in the exchange rate, yes.... but if I've got my
calculations right the thieves at the border will drive the price of that
drive far over the cost of the LiteOn

Seems to be a slight difference of opinion here.

BTW.... I found the following note regarding Lite-On drives (following links
from the cdrecord homepage) at http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq05.html#S5-1-43:
"Some of the drives appear to be based on Plextor units."

The reviews I've found of the drive have seemed generally positive, although
there may be some issues in the quality of any DAE done... but then again the
purpose of this drive would mainly be to write not read.... I've got a cd-rom
to do the other fun stuff.
