I don't believe it, my 2.4.4 kernel boots and KDE appears. I was missing one low-level scsi driver in the build. Thanks very much to Mike, David, Joel, Collins, Lonni, Kurt, Klaus-Peter, Douglas and of course, the Skippy-dude!! And I guess I should thank Les Bell too, for such a nice kernel build script and all the cool SxS editors. The chance that I could have done this without help was zero. Oh, and I too vote for compiling the kernel NOT in /usr/src ;- )
