I have just recompiled 2.4.10 on Suse 7.3 and have the same problem
but it does boot up to the kde login window, with just a blank screen till it 
reaches to login. It was not even doing that till I put back the vga=0x0317
and hased out initrd line. I used to use vga=normal but it does not like that.
