An additinal newbie friendly list, with an excellent SxS written for newbies, about a variety of linux topics, can be found at http://linux.nf The SxS (step by step) is written by list members, posted after peer review. At most a newbie might be politely pointed at that site for a more detailed explanation of how to do what they want. It's truly a step-by-step, rather than a bloated how-to. Might be similar to what you are suggesting.
