I have a sound problem at the moment with arts and dvd/vcd players. As soon as I fix that i'll be doing exactly that. I can play dvd's and vcd's on Xine, vlc, mtv and mplayer. However i think that vlc slides out of synch so that the lipsynch is behind. I am also testing for rippers and flask like replacements.
