I'd probably not recommend rsync as a permanent backup solution. Doug Hunley started this thread, which for some reason I refuse to let die. So here's another item that came to mind. www.backupcentral.com has a section called "free tools" which, upon cursory inspection" seem to quite nice and robust for their cost. Also I've heard anecdotally of people using Amanda with a fair amount of success and again it is priced as most other open source software solutions are.
