I have a similiar problem:

My kmail (2.2.1 as comes with Caldera 3.1) will not send mail. However,
netscape and sylpheed will. I just need to get it to a smarter host
on the same network. Nothing fancy. kmail receives mail ok. Just won't
send it. Not much you can configure. Maybe kmail wants to use a password
when sending? I have not entered one for other programs. They are only
needed on my system for pop, not smtp.
