Interestingly, I had the same thing here - only worse; Some (expletive 
deleted) kid of mine downloaded a '98 d/l accelerator, which installed onto 
'95!  Result: I couldn't even ping myself! 
ping 127.0.0.1 ... Destination host unreachable(!). Then it got onto my own 
personal, and highly guarded '95 installation (All installations via control 
panel, no crap allowed, no tsrs, minimum of games - 2 years since last 
reinstall). and THAT couldn't even ping itself. But we were saved by a .bat 
left there file to remove it, which undid the crap, and even fixed the other 
machine.
