Well, just to finalize this thread. I did install the drive (80 gigs) and
simply attached it to my motherboard, which is a fairly new one, and the
drive works fine, and all 80 gigs or thereabouts are seen by the operating
system (linux.)

Of interest, the box the drive came in advertises it to work with linux
as well as windows. The included adaptor, which I didn't use,  needed
windows drivers, I think.
