I'va always followed this simple three step proceedure when denied access
after su'ing:

1) I shout at the screen, "But I AM root, you idiot!  Let me in, NOW!!

2) "Damn, stupid, $#@& [chant some of your favorite grumbles here...]

3) Login in as root and do what I orinially had to
