This message comes from init.  Look in /etc/inittab for the line that starts gdm
in runlevel 5 (probably starts with 'x', what would you bet).  Whatever command
line is there is exiting quickly, probably due to an error.  Run that command as
root and you should see the error message, which will clue you in how to fix it.
