Can't you use ssh to get into the box to see what's up? I'm not running 
telnet either, but I can ssh to both my linux machines at home. An 
invaluable troubleshooting tool.

Beyond that, I have no idea what could be causing your problem, although 
I'm inclined to believe your suspicion that it's a cron job. Can you 
determine what specific cron jobs are running overnight? Execute them 
manually and see if any of them trigger the problem.
