Using KDE Control Center -> System -> Services, I started stopping services one-at-a-time. The culprit is the USB Hot Plug Daemon. Is this the same as 'hotpluguid'? It seems to still be loaded in memory but no longer coming to the top of top. ps -aux | grep uid:
michael 1118 0.0 2.9 16412 7420 ? S 21:52 0:00 hotpluguid Any way, problem solved if I can live without USB Hot Plugging.
