The only winmodem that I know of that is supposed to run in Linux is an Intel MD563x. There is a driver available from the Intel site; although, Intel offers no assurances that the Linux driver will work. Some of your confusion may be due to the fact that the 2.4.x kernels will automatically detect and install some of the newer jumperless non-winmodems that have factory settings above comm port 4 (ttyS3). I have one, a US Robotics 56k Flex that won't run on kernel 2.2.x without some reconfiguring. The Mandrake and SuSe 2.4.x kernels detected it on install and set it up as /dev/modem.
