Wow I just realised I might be having the same problem

> dmesg | grep DVD
ata5.00: ATAPI: DVDRW IDE 16X, VER A091, max UDMA/66
scsi 4:0:0:0: CD-ROM            DVDRW    IDE 16X          A091 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

*pops DVD in drive*

> sudo mount /dev/dvd /media/cd/
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

same problem

modprobe ide-cd didn't fix it
