mplayer -x 640 -y 480 tv://      #  no scaline

mplayer -x 1024 -y 768 tv://    # big pictures  with s/w scaling

mplayer -x 400 -y 300 tv://      # etc


It will distort the image to fit if you tell it an x:y which is not 4:3
