I'm alive! Thanks Steve for the post and everybody for suggestions and offers for help. Unfortunately I had no way of reading them without net access until now.
Incredible how dependent one becomes on the internet to find up-to-date information. In the end as suggested Dragon PC was the answer, but I had to call Steve to ask him to search the net for their current address because the shop in Gasson Street was closed and their number in Yellow Pages was ringing with no answer. The type of card I needed is quite old and had a suspicion most of the shops wouldn't stock it anymore so I also drove by Molten Media, but they're out of business too, and the only shop open on Washington Street PCU does not stock nvidia. I didn't know about Church Corner, but I'll check them next chance. Found the only existing Dragon PC in Riccarton as per Steve's instructions and voila, problem solved. I would tell you how why I couldn't use the spare laptop to search the net for the info needed, but the story involves some coffee, an early morning, the number 13, a metaphorical a black cat under a ladder, and it would be too long and out of topic for this post... To paraphrase one of Murphy's laws, one bad thing never happens alone and it so happens to cause maximum inconvenience at the most incovenient time - or something like that.
