I'm answering to my own post with the solution (of sorts): a clean
install of Fedora 17 cured this, and other oddities too, like a random
double-clicks.
Thank you for the follow up - there's nothing more annoying than
googling for a problem and finding multiple instances of the same
problem, with no resolution.
