Back-up all documents, photos, etc stored on the windows 7 laptop. Verify that the back-up can be used to restore documents, photos, etc. If you have another computer: Begin installation. If you get stuck, use the other computer to go online for help (including asking on this list). The install wizard provided with most distros is pretty good and you might find you don't need as much handholding as linux installs used to require in the bad old days. If you do need help, be specific about what exactly you're seeing on the screen that you need help with.
