Buffalo WBMR-HP-G300H + DD-WRT is an alternative, although they only seem to be available from the UK. You'll probably have the same issue if connecting to Telecom of connecting certified hardware whichever way you go. I think you'll be hard pushed to better the $150 or so landed of that product when building your own... quad gbit, wireless N, etc ( especially counting the running costs against old PC hardware ). I'm trying to get time to play with a buffalo router ( as a wireless hotspot ), but it's too early to report on that.
