Have you considered a Raspberry Pi? It's cheap, low-power, and specifically
designed for learning.

You can definitely play with Python (and Scratch- good for kids to learn
programming concepts).

And Minecraft:

I have one running as a home server- it plays my MP3s using mpd, and I can
watch movies on my mini-projector via the HDMI output using omxplayer.
Nothing special, but it's fantastic for the price.

If you buy one, don't forget the 'hidden' costs- case, USB power supply,
SDcard for the OS, keyboard, mouse, display. The display can be HDMI or DVI,
or you can use an old analog television with AV input.

Best wishes,

Andrew
