I've found RDS to be a mediocre performing service, and it's more cost-effective to run your own locally: you can actually tune it, and no TCP stack overhead either. Databases rarely hit the CPU hard once the caches are filled ( I'm talking web based apps here ) so they happily coexist with other things as long as you've got a shedload ( metric or imperial ) of memory.
I've seen loads of talk elsewhere about cloudflare now having a presence in NZ, by people that actually think it's a good service.
