Well if it works, fine, but it's annoying to firewall and for the
purpose at hand it's just an extra layer of complexity for no gain.
Rather the opposite, it's a waste of time - if it wasn't in this case,
this thread wouldn't exist.

That's what I was hinting at. NFS is not encrypted either. Compression
on the LAN isn't much of an issue, though ssh is a LAN bandwidth / CPU
load tradeoff so can still work out ahead on a LAN.

To use rsync directly you'll need to set up an rsync server and one
module within it. For a once-off it seems easier to use it over ssh and
not have to deal with authentication, access control etc, but it depends
on what other factors there are to consider as well.

Not powering down failing disks is wise, but reboots don't do that.
