I agree with chris,

I installed mysql on win & kubuntu with no real issue once
I'd setup admin password.
I just used guide front ends and point and clicked my way to
setting up my db structures etc.
then started coding in language of choice.

maybe you're fighting against mysql with regards to where it
wants to install files and so you find that your in the
current position your in now ??
