The underlying filesystems are essentially transparent to the tools, so
it doesn't matter.
cp /home/rik/letter.txt /mnt/h-o-river/
should work just as well if /mt/h-o-river is CIFS / SMB or ext4 or
reiser or NFS or whatever.
